Vision and mission

We are the national opera company dedicated to creating extraordinary encounters with opera, on stage and beyond.

Founded in 1931 as Sadler’s Wells Opera to make opera accessible to all, we continue that mission today. We present opera that’s different, creatively daring and inclusive.

It starts with a Breath: ENO and Greater Manchester.

Creating opera without limits

From performances at the London Coliseum and in Greater Manchester, to work in schools, communities and public spaces across the country, we’re committed to reaching and reflecting the full diversity of our nation.

As an active part of the UK’s creative and cultural ecosystem, we champion outstanding careers and foster new collaborations.

Sharing exceptional operatic experiences, showcasing the very best of British talent

We believe that singing in English enhances the emotional connection between performers and audiences.

Shaping the future of the art form

Shaping the art form, workforce and sector, through pioneering approaches to learning, training and creating with our communities and partners

The ENO has long had an enterprising spirit.

We have a strong track record in adapting to change and overcoming adversity – and this is matched by a boldness of spirit and an appetite to take risks and continually forge new ground.

Developing new ways to flourish

New ways to flourish in a changing world, through technology, innovation and enterprise

We will use the scale of opera and its unique combination of music, visual arts, movement, literature, crafts, technology and drama to create work that invites us to explore the big questions in life – in a way that only opera can.

There are no limits to the possibilities of our storytelling.

Building new and lasting relationships

Building new and lasting relationships with audiences, participants and partners, locally, nationally and internationally.

Where possible, we want to invite audiences, partners and participants to create with us.

We can all be creative (whether professionals or non-professionals), and we want to actively challenge assumptions around who gets to make and create art.
